EU vs. USA
08.11.05 (5:02 pm)   [edit]

If the European Union were a state in the USA it would belong to the poorest group of states. France, Italy, Great Britain and Germany have lower GDP per capita than all but four of the states in the United States. In fact, GDP per capita is lower in the vast majority of the EU-countries (EU 15) than in most of the individual American states. This puts Europeans at a level of prosperity on par with states such as Arkansas, Mississippi and West Virginia. Only the miniscule country of Luxembourg has higher per capita GDP than the average state in the USA. The results of the new study represent a grave critique of European economic policy.

Shark 99, your points were indeed correct. However, Europe does not try to compete with US economically they try and do create liasons with other countries based on this view point, when negotiating with other countries which are for the most part in the developing world, "Who would you prefer us or the Americans?" and since the US is often viewed unfavorably in these countries that is enough to convince the beauracracy of these nations to side with Europe. And since a lot of these nations have past colonial ties with Europe, even if they too are viewed unfavarobly, they are still seen as closer to them than the US. And this is how Europe competes with the US the "US vs Them" policy-and most times it works!

Indeed, cooperation and negotiation is always the best policy. Economically I prefer the laissez-faire method rather than the government meddling, but I do understand the need for certain government regulations.
